10 factors that drive microbrewery equipment price
Here's what most people don't realize: two "500L microbreweries" can differ in price by 3–4×. Equipment is custom-built, so the price follows your choices.
1. Target output / batch size.
Bigger tanks cost more - but not linearly. The real jump comes stepping up from 2 to 3, 4 or 5 vessels.
2. Number of vessels.
A 2-vessel system is most economical; adding vessels raises price but boosts capacity and flexibility.
3. Automation level.
Manual, semi-auto and full-auto can differ by tens of thousands. Semi-auto is a smart middle ground you can upgrade later.
4. Brand & quality of components.
Trusted sanitary fittings and reliable controls cost more but last far longer. Cheap parts have a shorter life.
5. Heating method.
Electric is simplest for small systems; steam is the industry standard for larger ones (but needs a boiler); direct fire saves money but is less precise.
6. Jacketing & cooling.
A jacketed fermenter with a glycol loop gives precise temperature control - essential for consistent beer.
7. Your local water quality.
If your water isn't clean or is inconsistent, you'll need treatment. If it's naturally excellent, you can save that cost entirely.
8. Material & surface finish.
Food-grade stainless (304 vs 316) and finish quality affect durability and price.
9. Customization & accessories.
Dry hopping, yeast propagation, keg washers, packaging - every one adds cost. Not all are necessary now; buy the essentials and add later.
10. Turnkey scope & shipping.
Tanks only vs a full turnkey package makes a big difference; international shipping and duties can add 10–15%.
